Part of the genome of two hunter-gatherers from 7,000 years ago

ScienceDaily (June 28, 2012) ? A team of scientists, led by researcher Carles Lalueza-Fox from CSIC (Spanish National Research Council), has recovered part of the genome of two individuals who were alive in the Mesolithic Period, 7000 years ago.? The remains were found at La Bra?a-Arintero site, located at Valdelugueros (Le?n), Spain.

The study results, published in the Current Biology, indicate that current Iberian populations do not come from these recently discovered humans.

The Mesolithic Period, framed between the Paleolithic and Neolithic Periods, is characterized by the advent of agriculture, coming from the Middle East.

The genome found is the oldest from Prehistory, 1,700 years before ?tzi, the Iceman lived.

Researchers have also recovered the complete mitochondrial DNA of one of these individuals, through which they could determine that European populations from Mesolithic Period were very uniform genetically. Carles Lauleza-Fox, from the Institute of Evolutionary Biology (CSIC-UPF), states: "These hunters-gatherers shared nomadic habits and had a common origin. Despite their geographical distance, individuals from the regions corresponding to the current England, Germany, Lithuania, Poland, and Spain, shared the same mitochondrial lineage."

The DNA data, which represent the 1.34% and the 0.5% of both individuals total genome, show that they are not directly connected to current populations of the Iberian Peninsula. Iberians from the Mesolithic Period were closer to current populations of northern Europe, who could have assimilated part of the genetic legacy of these hunters-gatherers.

La Bra?a-Arintero site was discovered in 2006 by chance. Juan Manuel Vidal Encinas, archeologist from the Regional Government of Castilla y Le?n, who has also participated in the study, has excavated it at a later date. The cave, due to its location in a cold and mountainous area, is a suitable place for the good preservation of the DNA of these two individuals, found inside it.

The oldest remains from Prehistory

CSIC researcher emphasizes: "So far, we only had one genome of the European Prehistory, that of ?tzi [also known as the Iceman], from the Neolithic Period. His mummy, belonging to a man who lived 5300 years ago, was found in the Tyrolean Alps, on the border between Austria and Italy. La Bra?a-Arintero site offers a unique opportunity to obtain pre-Neolithic genomes."

According to Lalueza-Fox, this is only a first result since the intention of the team is to recover the complete DNA of these individuals, and to compare it with that of the modern humans. CSIC researcher discloses: "The arrival of the Neolithic Period brought about a replacement of populations, and could cause genetic changes in genes associated with new infectious diseases, and in metabolic genes linked to changes in diet. Therefore, all the information extracted from this genome will be absolutely important."

Ashton Jojo, 11-Year-Old Girl, Dies Of Electrocution While Playing Mini Golf In Florida

ORLANDO, Fla. -- A medical examiner says an 11-year-old New York girl was electrocuted while trying to retrieve a ball from a pond at a time-share resort's miniature golf course near Orlando.

Orange County deputies say Ashton Jojo cried out in pain Wednesday afternoon as she stepped into the 2-foot-deep pond, according to the Associated Press. Orange Lake Resort guest Christopher Burges of Alabama heard her screams and tried to rescue her. He was also injured.

The girl died shortly after arriving at Florida Hospital Celebration.

The resort released a statement reporting that a third guest was also injured, adding, "The miniature golf facility where the incident happened is closed and will not re-open until further notice. Our thoughts and prayers are with the guests, their families and friends during this time," Reuters reported.

A building safety department official told WKMG that the electrocution may have been caused by a possible faulty pump connected to the wrong circuit breaker.

The station also reported that the resort's golf course was connected to several electrical code violations.

Authorities say the Latham, N.Y., girl turned 11 on Friday. She was visiting Orlando with her parents and brother.

Next stop for Arizona immigration law: Back to the courts?

Damian Dovarganes / AP

Members of the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles hold a rally in response to the ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court on Arizona's immigration law, outside the Los Angeles Federal Court building on Monday.

By James Eng, msnbc.com

The ?show me your papers? provision of Arizona?s immigration law that was left standing by the U.S. Supreme Court is likely to wind up in a familiar place ? back in the courtroom.

The nation?s top justices on Monday struck down three sections of SB 1070 but unanimously upheld the most-discussed provision: Section 2(B) requires police to check the immigration status of people they stop, detain or arrest for other legitimate reasons ?if there?s reasonable suspicion? the person is in the country illegally.

But exactly how local police will go about enforcing that provision is raising more questions than answers. Enforcement had been put on hold pending the Supreme Court decision; lower courts must lift the injunction before it can take effect.

Even the?Supreme Court justices hinted that they expect the?provision to be legally challenged again.

?There is a basic uncertainty about what the law means and how it will be enforced. At this stage, without the benefit of a definitive interpretation from the state courts, it would be inappropriate to assume 2(B) will be construed in a way that creates a conflict with federal law,? the high court said.

The Supreme Court declared three parts of Arizona's immigration law unconstitutional, but unanimously upheld the most controversial part. Now the high court is expected to make a ruling on "Obamacare" on Thursday. NBC's Pete Williams reports and NBC's Chuck Todd and Professor Noah Feldman weigh in.

?This opinion does not foreclose other preemption and constitutional challenges to the law as interpreted and applied after it goes into effect.?

The American Civil Liberties Union says it is exploring legal challenges to keep ?show me your papers? from ever taking effect.

?The Supreme Court vacated the injunction against it but took pains to point out the potential constitutional problems that are inherent in Section 2(B) and drew a firm line in the sand that the state cannot cross,? said Cecillia Wang, director of the ACLU Immigrants' Rights Project. ?We are going to be in court bringing new claims and evidence to stop 2(B) again.?

Among the possible claims are that the provision violates the Fourth Amendment right against unreasonable searches and seizures and that it invites racial profiling, ACLU officials say.

Joe Rubio, lead organizer for the Arizona Interfaith Network, a coalition of religious groups that opposed SB 1070, said the provision ?leaves a nebulous area? if it goes into effect.

MSNBC's Thomas Roberts talks to NBC News Justice Correspondent Pete Williams and Sheriff Larry Dever of Cochise County, Ariz., shown here, about the ripple effect of the Supreme Court's ruling.

?It?s going to be important that the state monitors very closely how police deal with immigrants during regular stops and make sure racial profiling does not occur,? Rubio said.

?I think we?re going to have a few months here where people are suspending judgment to see how it?s going to be implemented.?

Jim Gilchrist, founder and president of the Minuteman Project, an anti-illegal immigration group that recruits volunteers to patrol the U.S. border with Mexico, said the Supreme Court decision ?left vague? the fate of enforcement of immigration laws by local police.

?Police will be able to ask (about immigration status); however, that?s all they can do,? he said.

?Nobody?s really getting serious about this. Everybody keeps kicking the ball around the court.?

The interpretation of Section 2(B)?also could put law officers in a precarious bind. There are no written instructions on how long local police must wait for federal immigration officials to respond, for example, when they encounter someone they suspect is illegal.? And immigration checks could open police up to accusations of racial profiling.

"Talk about 'no win' - if they find the person is not in authorized status, what do they do? Hold them for ICE which doesn't want them? Charge them with some state crime?" said Margaret Stock, an immigration attorney who has?has testified before Congress on immigration, homeland security and military issues.

"If they make a mistake, they get sued. If they make too many mistakes, the rest of the statute gets enjoined as unconstitutional as enforced."

"We're going to get sued if we do. We're going to get sued if we don't. That's a terrible position to put law enforcement officers in," Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik, whose territory covers much of southern Arizona, told The Associated Press.

Tucson police Chief Roberto Villasenor told the AP he estimates the statute will result in 50,000 additional calls a year to federal immigration authorities in his city alone.

Romney pledges immigration reform, wants more state 'latitude'

Suspects for minor crimes like shoplifting or vandalism, who would normally be released with a citation, must be booked into custody if immigration authorities "don't answer the phone, they never call us back after we talk to them or whatever," Villasenor said.

The Department of Homeland Security acknowledges that the provision raises the possibility that its offices might be flooded by calls for verification checks.

?The Court?s decision not to strike down Section 2?at this time will make DHS? work more challenging,? DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano said in a statement.

Jon Feere, of the Center for Immigration Studies, a Washington-based think tank that advocates for limited legal immigration, suggested that enforcement will ultimately lead to tougher immigration laws once Congress or the courts are forced to act definitively.

?There will now be an extensive record every time Arizona contacts ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) about an illegal alien detained by local law enforcement. When the White House inevitably refuses to take an illegal alien into custody, forcing Arizona to release the alien back out onto the streets, it will become a national story if the alien goes on to commit a serious crime. Lax federal enforcement of immigration laws will be to blame,? he wrote in a blog post.

Five other states have passed laws similar to Arizona?s --?Alabama, Georgia, Indiana, South Carolina and Utah.

The ACLU says it has raised nearly $8.8 million in a special fund to challenge ?show me your papers? laws in Arizona and those other states. And it?s ready to go to court again.

?If state governments enact new immigration bills, we say bring it on, we will see them in court,? ACLU Executive Director Anthony Romero said Monday.

The Justice Department has set up a federal hotline for the public to report potential civil rights concerns regarding the Arizona law. The phone number is 1-855-353-1010. The email is: SB1070(at)usdoj.gov.

1)? Matching coffee mugs from Anthropologie ? I originally picked out this??T??mug for my husband as a souvenir from?Seattle?a?few weeks ago.? Then I decided to get the ?S? mug for myself so we could match when we have our morning coffee together?at the?breakfast table on the weekends.? Which almost never happens?? who has time to sit down and have coffee in our house?

2)? Drinking Green tea instead of Coffee ? While I was?on vacation?for two weeks, which included?traveling from Georgia to Seattle, I lost a lot of sleep (crossing three time zones in 24 hours) so I was drinking coffee every day.??Add in the extra sugary treats?and not so healthy foods I consumed on?vacation,?and I needed to detox!? Once I got home from vacation, I started drinking more?green tea instead of coffee which I enjoy both?hot and iced.

The inspirational quotes on the tea bags are just a bonus!

3)? Testing new recipes I find on Pinterest ? Last weekend I bought?a pint of freshly picked blueberries from the local farmer?s market.?A picture of a blueberry donut on?Jenna?s?blog made my mouth water and my creative juices start flowing.??Instead of making my predictable (but delicious) Blueberry Banana muffins, I was inspired to make my own donuts.??I found myself?clicking on over?to Pinterest to?search for recipes.? Two of them looked easy and appetizing, so I made two different batches for taste testing.

??DSC_0861

DSC_0864

The first recipe included cake flour, buttermilk, applesauce and fresh blueberries (of course).? While I did not make any changes to the batter recipe, I did switch out the orange juice for fresh squeezed lemon juice in the glaze.? Before the donut pan went into the oven, I?was worried because the batter looked thin but it ended up making beautiful donuts.??After cooling for about 10 minutes, I dipped the spongy donuts in the?sweet, lemony?glaze.? They tasted light, fresh and photographed beautifully.??

DSC_0873

The second recipe?included all-purpose flour,?whole wheat flour, applesauce and almond milk.? That combined with the blueberry yogurt (or in my case, plain yogurt with added?crushed blueberries)?gave the second batch of donuts a?darker color.? This batter was THICK, which made it difficult to spoon into the donut pan without over filling.? I also thought the crushed blueberries in the glaze made them less visually appealing but they tasted more like a cake donut than the first recipe.?

My biggest mistake was not eating them all right away, when I woke up the next morning?my day-old glazed donuts were soggy and sad-looking.?

4) These cute little pumpkin shaped zucchini ? ?I bought at the local Farmers Market last weekend.? Their unique shape caught my eye and by the time I was forking over my three crumpled dollar bills, I was already dreaming up new recipes for them;?sliced and grilled, oven fried chips, sliced and layered in a lasagna? oh, I could go on and on.

5) Setting the table for one ? Personally I like my house to be peaceful, quiet and a relaxing environment for the entire family.??I have?yet to actually live in that house but it lives on in my fantasies.? So?last Sunday evening after?caring my for daugther who had?strep throat, cooking my Supper Sundays and looking?ahead to a busy week at work I decided to take a time out for myself.??Setting?just one?place mat, napkin, glass and fork on the round patio table in our backyard made the kids give me a ?mom?s crazy look?.? Luckily my husband knew this was a sign that mommy wanted some alone time and told the kids to go play in their rooms.??We enjoyed a relaxing ten minutes outside (I let my husband sit with me, I just didn?t make him a plate of food) then went back in to deal with the mess our kids had made in our absence.

6) My new double-insulated smoothie cup -?which inspired the return of Green Monster smoothies!??Part of the SWAG that I received from BlogHer Food a few weeks ago, this cup does not sweat on the outside even when it has a luscious frozen smoothie on the inside.? I blended 1 cup of almond milk, 1/2 cup of frozen mango chunks, 1/2 frozen banana, 1 tablespoon chia seeds, a large handful of?baby spinach leaves, a drizzle of honey and 5-6 ice cubes in the blender.? It makes a large serving so I?shared the smoothie with my 3 yr old son.? When my daughter came home?from a playdate, she saw the?blender on the?counter and a?little of?the smoothie left in my cup.? After stealing?my last few sips,?she asked me to make her?another?spinach and banana smoothie??that girl knows how to make her mommy proud!

7) Coconut Palm Sugar -?Another?SWAG item from the BlogHer Food conference, this organic sweetener can be used as a substitute for brown sugar in baking or sprinkled on top of oatmeal, muffins or cereal.? I used it in a new recipe which leads me to #8?

DSC_0915

?8) Trying?MORE new recipes I find on Pinterest - like this baked oatmeal dish.? I?tweaked the ingredients a little by using regular rolled oats, substituting the coconut palm sugar for the brown sugar and omitting the fresh raspberries.? I also?poured the?wet ingredients into the dry ingredients in the mixing bowl, then folded the sliced bananas into the batter.??The aroma in the kitchen was similar to chocolate chip cookies so the kids felt like they were getting dessert instead of dinner.? Yes, I served them dessert for dinner last night.? They loved it and they did not go to bed hungry so it was a win-win for everyone.?

9) Recreating my favorite restaurant recipes at home -?like this Chicken Burrito Bowl which is inspired by Chipotle.? I love Chipotle.? My husband loves Chipotle.? However my wallet does not like to go to Chipotle as often as my stomach does, so I decided to?create my own chicken burrito bowls at home.??This time I even?prepared my own cilantro-lime brown rice, roasted fresh corn, seasoned the black beans and made fresh creamy guacamole.??My favorite jar of Texas salsa and leftover chicken breasts that my husband grilled the day?before completed?the Chipotle inspired chicken burrito bowl.

???DSC_0927

Hopefully I left you with your mouth-watering!? I?ll be posting the recipe for these burrito bowls later this week!

Fantasy sleepers and busts

Every year at this time Rotoworld constructs a deep list of ?sleepers? and ?busts? for the Rotoworld Fantasy Football Draft Guide magazine. Below is a sample of the 50+ picks for undervalued, sleepers, overvalued, and busts that can already be found in the 2012 online Draft Guide, which will be live on July 5.

Undervalued

Michael Vick, Eagles, QB - Vick was in the discussion for the No. 1 overall fantasy pick at this time a year ago. Nothing has changed this year except the offensive line has solidified and both starting receivers are poised for bounce-back seasons. As evidenced by the trophies he almost single-handedly put on the mantle two years ago, Vick still has the highest ceiling in fantasy.

Current ADP: 4.04, 41st overall, QB6

Carson Palmer, Raiders, QB - Yards per attempt is arguably the most important statistic for a quarterback. Only Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady, and Matt Schaub bested Palmer?s 8.4 figure with the Raiders last year. Palmer?s 275 yards per in 10 games last season project to 4,400 over a full schedule.

Current ADP: 11.04, 128th overall, QB16

Trent Richardson, Browns, RB - The local media and the Browns? GM expect Richardson to be a workhorse right out of the gates. Widely viewed as the best back to enter the NFL since Adrian Peterson, Richardson is a candidate to lead the NFL in carries as a rookie. Forget about the lack of surrounding talent; Peyton Hillis finished as fantasy No. 2 back in a weaker offense two years ago.

Current ADP: 2.02, 14th overall, RB10

Jonathan Stewart, Panthers, RB - The Panthers boast three superstar offensive talents, but this one continues to fly under the radar. Only LeSean McCoy, Adrian Peterson, and Maurice Jones-Drew earned a higher running grade from Pro Football Focus, and Stewart forced more missed tackles in the passing game than any other NFL back. Stewart led the backfield in snaps and was more productive than DeAngelo Williams, but he?s still being drafted as Williams? backup. Should Williams miss time, Stewart is a must-start RB1 option.

Current ADP: 8.04, 89th overall, RB36

Percy Harvin, Vikings, WR - ?From late November on, Harvin was utilized as a double-threat on the ground and through the air, turning back the clock to his Gator days as the most explosive player on the field. Harvin averaged 103.3 scrimmage yards and a touchdown on 11.3 touches per game from Weeks 10-17 while easily establishing career-highs in receptions (87), receiving yards (967), and rushing yards (345) in a 7th-place fantasy finish. With that workload, he?s essentially slump-proof in fantasy terms.

Current ADP: 5.02, 50th overall, WR20

Brandon Lloyd, Patriots, WR - Lloyd finished 25th in fantasy points, getting open at will, despite catching passes from A.J. Feeley and Kellen Clemens for half the season. The star of offseason practices, Lloyd has made a seamless transition in his former coordinator?s offense, establishing a rapport with Tom Brady. Lloyd should be a lock for double-digit scores as the outside threat Brady has craved since losing Randy Moss.

Current ADP: 5.05, 54th overall, WR21

Sleepers

Jake Locker, Titans, QB - Locker followed up an impressive preseason with a 99.4 passer rating, 8.2 YPA, 4:0 TD-to-INT ratio and dazzling rushing ability in three second-half relief appearances. If his obvious talent edge wins out over Matt Hasselbeck, the Titans have the young offensive playmakers to scorch opposing defenses this season.

Current ADP: Undrafted out of 24 QBs

Bernard Scott, Bengals, RB - Scott never seriously challenged Cedric Benson for carries, but he?s expected to be utilized in a committee attack with newly signed BenJarvus Green-Ellis. It won?t take long for the coaching staff to realize Scott offers far more explosiveness as a runner as well as a receiver. By mid-season, Scott should have the reins as the lead back.

Current ADP: Undrafted out of 58 RBs.

Kevin Smith, Lions, RB - An intriguing fantasy wildcard with two question marks in front of him in the Detroit backfield, Smith played as well as he ever has after signing in Week 10 last season. Versatile enough to play all three downs as long as his body holds up, Smith is an ideal roster stash as a RB3/4.

Current ADP: 12.10, 149th overall, RB53

Eric Decker, Broncos, WR - Decker ran more routes and caught more passes from Peyton Manning than any Denver receiver this offseason, quickly earning the veteran?s trust. Decker is a good route runner and an underrated athlete with size and special ball skills. Anointed by Kyle Orton as the ?ideal? slot receiver last year, Decker is more talented than Manning?s former slot machines, Austin Collie and Brandon Stokley.

Current ADP: 6.06, 69th overall, WR28

Brian Hartline, Dolphins, WR - By default, Hartline is set to take over as the No. 1 receiver in Miami following the Brandon Marshall trade. A complementary receiver to date, Hartline is more athletic than commonly believed -- similar to Jordy Nelson, who broke out with Joe Philbin?s Packers in 2011.

Current ADP: Undrafted out of 63 WRs.

A complementary receiver to date, Hartline is more athletic than commonly believed -- similar to Jordy Nelson, who broke out with Joe Philbin?s Packers in 2011.

Current ADP: Undrafted out of 63 WRs.

Overvalued

Peyton Manning, Broncos, QB - Arm-strength questions aside, Manning figures to suffer early-season growing pains while developing a rapport with his offensive line, wide receivers, and play caller. Throw in a brutal non-divisional schedule, and the obvious move is to let another owner risk a fifth or sixth-round draft pick on Manning.

Current ADP: 6.02, 63rd overall, QB8

Michael Turner, Falcons, RB - The patron saint of volume runners, Turner was already headed for a reduced workload after fading down the stretch for a second straight season. New coordinator Dirk Koetter plans to operate a more pass-heavy offense, diminishing Turner?s role even further. Heavily dependent on short-yardage scores, Turner is on a crash-course with a season out of LenDale White?s career.

Current ADP: 3.06, 31st overall, RB16

Wes Welker, Patriots, WR - Welker averaged an unsustainable 8.25/120/0.75 line in the first eight games compared to 6.8/71/0.36 the rest of the way -- including 7-of-11 games in which he failed to crack 60 yards. Most troublesome, Welker?s targets didn?t drop in the second half even though his per-play production did. With Brandon Lloyd on board, those targets do figure to go down this season.

Current ADP: 3.04, 28th overall, WR6

Jordy Nelson, Packers, WR - Nelson closed out the season as a top-three fantasy WR due to single coverage, refined route running, explosive run-after-catch ability, increased trust from his QB, Greg Jennings? late-season knee injury, and -- last but not least -- unsustainable good luck with the deep ball. Pro Football Focus notes that Nelson accrued half of his yards and scores on passes thrown 20+ yards beyond the line of scrimmage. That?s simply not sustainable year-in and year-out.

Current ADP: 4.03, 40th overall, WR14

Jason Witten, Cowboys, TE - On the way to his least productive season since 2007, Witten averaged just 5.8 targets in the second half of the season after seeing 8.9 in the first half. Over the final five games, Witten finished 19th among fantasy tight ends -- behind the likes of Dennis Pitta and Jeremy Shockey. Now a lower-tier TE1, Witten is no longer worth elite tight end price tag.

Current ADP: 6.11, 74th overall, TE7

Busts

Frank Gore, 49ers, RB - The Niners ran Gore into the ground last October, and he paid for it with a 3.2 yards per carry average while playing through multiple injuries in the second half of the season. Gore no longer has a major role in the passing game, and the 49ers brought in Brandon Jacobs as a short-yardage hammer. Where is the fantasy upside?

Current ADP: 4.02, 39th overall, RB19

BenJarvus Green-Ellis, Bengals, RB - ?A timeshare back about to be exposed outside of the Patriots? offense. The dictionary definition of a plodder, Green-Ellis didn't have a run over 18 yards last season. If you take away the game where the Jets played seven defensive backs throughout, Green-Ellis? per-carry average falls below 3.5 yards. You can find backs like this on the waiver wire throughout the season.

Current ADP: 5.05, 53rd overall, RB24

Sidney Rice, Seahawks, WR - How would you feel about taking on the risk of Jahvid Best if he was coming off twin labrum surgeries in his shoulders? If Best is wearing a red flag as an injury risk, Rice is sporting fluorescent hazmat tape after his third concussion in 12 months ended his season prematurely last year.

Current ADP: 8.11, 96th overall, WR37

Brent Celek, Eagles, TE - Celek erupted for 542 of his 811 yards in the second half of the season with Jeremy Maclin injured and DeSean Jackson in the doghouse. With both receivers healthy and poised for bounce-back seasons, Celek will fall back to the third or fourth option in the passing attack.

Current ADP: 13.04, 155th overall, TE15

NATO will exit Afghanistan as Soviets did, through Central Asia

NATO signs deals with Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Kazakhstan to truck its military supplies from Afghan war out through Central Asia, giving it options instead of closed Pakistan route.

NATO may not know the final result of its intervention in Afghanistan, but it now has an exit plan. And the exit will take place through Central Asia, the same route the Soviet troops took after their withdrawal in 1988 and 1989.

As relations worsen between the United States and Pakistan, NATO has signed deals with Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Kazakhstan (see map here) to move out the tons of equipment that must be withdrawn by 2014, when NATO makes its final exit from Afghanistan.

Speaking with Agence France-Presse news agency, NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said that NATO now considers Central Asia and its Russian-built roads to be the most expedient route out of Afghanistan. ?

"These agreements will give us a range of new options and the robust and flexible transport network we need," Mr. Rasmussen said.

Tarnished by more than a decade of war, mutual recriminations, and foreign policy goals that are increasingly at odds, the US-Pakistani relationship now has reached a nadir. From the early post 9/11 days, when NATO received 90 percent of its supplies for the Afghan war through the Pakistani port of Karachi, now Pakistan has cut off NATO?s old supply routes. Last November, Pakistan banned NATO?s use of Pakistani territory after NATO planes mistakenly bombed a Pakistani post, killing 24 Pakistani soldiers.

For Pakistan, the NATO bombing was the last straw, following the violation of its territorial sovereignty last year when US Navy SEALs captured and killed Osama bin Laden in the Pakistani city of Abbottabad.

In testosterone-deficient men, major weight loss was an added benefit of testosterone replacement therapy for most of the patients who participated in a new study. The results will be presented Saturday at The Endocrine Society's 94th Annual Meeting in Houston.

"The substantial weight loss found in our studyan average of 36 poundswas a surprise," said the study's lead author, Farid Saad, PhD, of Berlin-headquartered Bayer Pharma.

Although prior studies using testosterone therapy in testosterone-deficient men consistently show changes in body composition, such as increased lean mass and decreased fat mass, Saad said the net effect on weight seemed unchanged in those studies. However, Saad said their study, which took place in Germany, had a longer follow-up by at least two years and used long-acting injections of testosterone.

The investigators restored testosterone to normal levels in 255 testosterone-deficient ("hypogonadal") men, whose average age was nearly 61 (range, 38 to 83 years). Treatment lasted for up to five years, with injections given at day 1, after 6 weeks and then every 12 weeks after that. Patients did not follow a controlled diet or standard exercise program but received advice to improve their lifestyle habits.

On average, the men weighed 236 pounds before beginning testosterone treatment and 200 pounds after treatment (106.2 versus 90 kilograms), the authors reported. Weight loss was reportedly continuous, with an average reduction in body weight ranging from about 4 percent after one year of treatment to more than 13 percent after five years.

In addition, men lost an average of nearly 3.5 inches (8.8 centimeters) around their waist.

"These results are encouraging because studies show that weight loss drugs and lifestyle interventions have been largely unsuccessful, especially long term," Saad said.

Testosterone deficiency becomes more common with age. Saad said many middle-aged men with testosterone deficiency are obese, explaining that there is "a vicious circle" in obesity and low testosterone.

"Obesity is associated with reduced testosterone, and low testosterone induces weight gain," Saad wrote in the study abstract.

Testosterone replacement is the standard treatment for most men with symptomatic testosterone deficiency, according to The Endocrine Society guidelines.

In the study by Saad and colleagues, treatment used a slow-release, injectable form of the male hormone (testosterone undecanoate) that is not yet available in the United States. It is marketed in Europe, Latin America, Australia and parts of Asia and Africa.

Saad is an employee of Bayer Pharma, which makes a brand of testosterone undecanoate and which partially funded the study in its final two years.

Researchers in Barcelona have created an app that may prove useful to riders of public transit who are blind, deaf or otherwise disabled. OnTheBus hooks into GPS and transit data and alerts the user where and when they need to board, signal and disembark.

While transit systems make some allowances for riders who may be unable to see or hear when the bus arrives, or they themselves have arrived at their stop, there are doubtless many riders who could use some additional help.

After checking a few routes with the user, the app will direct them to the nearest bus stop and inform them when their bus should be arriving. Once on, it will tell them how many stops they will be riding for, and tells them when to activate the "stop" cord or button. And once they've returned to the pavement, it continues guiding them to their destination with walking directions.

Users don't have to type, either: The app will accept voice input or writing with symbols, and a separate interface was designed for people with severe visual impairment or total blindness. You can watch a demonstration of the app below; it's in Spanish, but the functionality is easy to understand:

It only works with buses for now, as the GPS signal would be blocked in subway systems. But the researchers are looking to expand into other transit styles, and are even considering adding augmented reality features to help people locate stops ? for instance, after determining the user's position and orientation, the phone's camera could display the bus stop through the landscape and give turn-by-turn directions.

The OnTheBus database currently supports buses in Barcelona, Madrid, and Rome, in several languages. The makers hope to expand it to other cities and languages, though beyond the next few their plans are not being stated. The app is available now for Android.

Postmates Rolls Out Dynamic Pricing To New Users Of Its ?Get It Now? Delivery Service

postmatesA month ago, mobile delivery startup Postmates publicly launched its 'Get It Now' on-demand courier service in San Francisco, allowing its users to order pretty much anything from various stores and restaurants around the city. When it introduced the plan, it charged a flat $7.99 fee for all deliveries made within an hour. Now it's changing things up just a bit, with a new dynamic pricing plan that will range anywhere from $5 up to $12, based on how difficult the delivery is. The dynamic pricing plan is based on an algorithm which calculates the fee based on the amount of time spent traveling and distance traveled, how long its couriers spend shopping or waiting in line to pick up an item, and the type of store that the user ordered from. Prices are based on historical data from the last month of operations, and will continue to be adjusted as new deliveries provide more data.

What Your Brain Looks Like When You Lose Self-Control

IRA FLATOW, HOST:

Ever wonder why you worked so hard to avoid the lasagna at dinner only to give in to your craving for not one but two helpings of cake for dessert? Well, new research may hold some answers to this vexing question. A new study in the Journal of Consumer Psychology confirms what we've been - what we've known for some time, and that is each of us has an internal reservoir of self-control. We have a reservoir of self-control that it depletes. Every time we resist a temptation, we use a little bit of it up.

But for the first time, researchers have taken pictures of the brain to show what was happening when a person exerts and then loses self-control. Dr. William Hedgcock was a co-author of the study. He is a neuroscientist and assistant professor of marketing at the University of Iowa. He joins us from Denver. Welcome to SCIENCE FRIDAY.

DR. WILLIAM HEDGCOCK: Oh, thanks for having me.

FLATOW: Well, first, let me back up a bit because I think it would be surprising to most people to learn that we actually have a reservoir of self-control.

HEDGCOCK: Sure. So this is a theory called regulatory resource depletion. And like you said, when people exert self-control, what we see is people have a hard time exerting self-control later, so this idea of one resource may be, you know, not intuitive. But I think most of us have had this sort of experience where you exert self-control at one point and then end up succumbing to temptation later.

FLATOW: Mm-hmm. And where is that center of self-control?

HEDGCOCK: Well, what we're finding is that the center seems to be the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, so it's an area that's sort of near the temple and underneath the temple of your head.

FLATOW: Hmm. And how do we know that that's where it is?

HEDGCOCK: Well, so we ran an fMRI study where we had subjects come into the scanner. They first exerted self-control, and we saw them having activation in areas like the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and the anterior cingulate cortex. And this is what, you know, we would have expected. Then we had them exert self-control later on a subsequent task, and we saw less activity in this dorsolateral prefrontal cortex area.

FLATOW: So it had been depleted in - some of their self control was gone.

HEDGCOCK: Yeah. So we saw behaviorally that they have less self-control, and that seemed to be correlated with the fact they had less activity in that area.

FLATOW: Now, is the reservoir a reservoir of chemicals? Is it a reservoir of neurons? What exactly is the reservoir?

HEDGCOCK: So we don't really know that yet. We do know that there's less activity in that area. It seems unlikely that it's a neurotransmitter, for instance, but we would need some follow-up studies to find out exactly why is it less active there.

FLATOW: Mm-hmm. And what kind of test do you do when you test people for their self-control? Do you put pie in front of them and say, you can only have one bite or what?

HEDGCOCK: Well, that certainly - some people do that. So we'll put people in front of brownies or something and then see later, would they like to choose brownies versus a healthy snack or - also, we test them on things like, will they perform well on a cognitive task. But in the scanner, we couldn't do that. It's difficult to, you know, put a pie next to a person in the scanner.

(LAUGHTER)

HEDGCOCK: So what we did was something a little bit more sterile than that. We had them look at a fixation point on a screen, and we flash words underneath the fixation. And the words would move around and - but they're very close to the fixation. We told subjects to ignore them and definitely not read them, but this was difficult or, for the most part, impossible for subjects to do. So it required self-control on their part to not read the words.

FLATOW: Don't think of pink elephants.

HEDGCOCK: Yeah. Well, so that's another version of - or another way to manipulate self-control. You could have him not think about elephants, which is difficult to do once we mention it to you.

FLATOW: Right. 1-800-989-8255. Talking with Dr. William Hedgcock about exerting self-control. And so can you actually tell at the moment by looking at the scan when, uh-oh, they've lost their self-control?

HEDGCOCK: Well, what we saw was sort of a gradual depletion over time. We didn't see a particular timeframe. And by the way, our subjects sometimes were able to exert self-control later. It's not like they completely lost it. They were just less able. They just occasionally would succumb to temptation more frequently than when they were not depleted.

FLATOW: Mm-hmm. Let's see if we can get a phone call in here from Bill in Loma Linda, California. Hi, Bill.

BILL: Hi there. Thank you for taking my call. I love your show.

FLATOW: Thank you.

BILL: I'm really interested in this subject, neuroscience and self-control. And you guys - it's fascinating. I was wondering just - if your guest speaker had any idea or any speculation on how we can maybe improve self-control or modulate the self-control, you know, maybe modeling it in an animal study and then improving self-control.

FLATOW: Yeah, because you got to - you're going to bet I'm sure, and let me ask Dr. Hedgcock about this, that the pharmaceutical companies would be very interested in a pill, right?

HEDGCOCK: Well, I think the pharmaceutical, you know, companies and also, you know, just people or policy makers in general. You know, we just ran a quick behavioral experiment to see what would happen and it seems pretty simple, but what we had people do is think about ways they would actually execute control. So we went to a gymnasium. We had people coming out who had this sort of fitness goal or eating healthy goal, and we would just have them think about ways that they would execute that. So come to the gym three times a week or, you know, eat healthy and not - versus unhealthy foods. And that would slightly improve him.

We don't think that - we don't think that it replenished the resource, so to speak, but it was sort of a crutch. It would just make it easier to exert control. But, as you mentioned, this idea of pharmacological interventions, it, you know, it's too early to tell exactly what would be useful. But these brain images provide us at least with some direction on where we should look.

FLATOW: Mm-hmm. Do you know how it's replenished? Did you image participants' brains after a period of time to find out?

HEDGCOCK: No, we didn't do that. It would seem to take a while. Right now, all we know that will help you is to take a break. So just do something that doesn't require self-control. You know, if you take a nap or if you are somewhere where its easy to exert self-control so that you don't sort of tire it out, it seems that people are able to replenish is that way.

FLATOW: I guess it's sort of like the - what people tell you if, you know, take yourself out of that situation that's giving you loss of self-control.

HEDGCOCK: Yeah, that's correct. And not only will it help you right there at that situation, but it might help you later when you're trying to exert self-control in a later time when it's harder to avoid temptation.

FLATOW: So have you found that you can practice self-control?

HEDGCOCK: So I have not personally run that study, but we do know other researchers have to look to that and found that if you practice self-control, you're able, actually, to strengthen this or improve your resource so that you'll have a better ability to not wear out over time.

FLATOW: It's like the muscle theory, right? If you use your muscle over and over again, you strengthen it.

HEDGCOCK: Yeah. At least in these two ways, this sort of muscle analogy seems to fit with how your regulatory resources worked.

FLATOW: Let's go to Austin in Sand Point, Alaska. Hi, Austin.

AUSTIN: Hey...

FLATOW: Hey there.

AUSTIN: ...thanks for taking my call.

FLATOW: You're welcome. Go ahead.

AUSTIN: Hey. I had - I study theology as a pastor, and I was curious: did you notice anything like correlations between people with the religious convictions and increased self-control or decreased self-control or anything like that?

HEDGCOCK: You know, I'm sorry to say, we did not end up looking at that - that's an interesting question - things like, you know, religiosity or personality traits or gender. Honestly, the things that we've looked at, when we have looked at those, they don't tend to be a very big predictor. But I haven't specifically looked at religion.

FLATOW: All right. Thanks for calling, Austin. Can you - if you looked at an image of the brain - a brain scan of somebody, can you tell from looking at the scan how much self-control they have or have - how much reservoir they have left?

HEDGCOCK: No, we can't do that. I'm sure people would be interested. You know, just because an area of the brain is bigger, it doesn't necessarily mean that it would be, you know, more, you know, stronger, let's say. So, a large deal of KFC or small, it doesn't tell us that people are better able at exerting self-control. I suppose the only media exception to that would be if someone has brain damage to an area, so particularly taking out that area, then you might be able to predict that they'd be very bad at self-control.

FLATOW: We have a tweet from Kaye McKenzie(ph), who says: I wonder if this could help alcoholics, and the like, to resist temptation?

HEDGCOCK: So things like alcoholism are a little bit different. But certainly, with the idea of when they are trying to resist temptation that this could help them out.

FLATOW: This is SCIENCE FRIDAY from NPR. I'm Ira Flatow talking with Dr. William Hedgcock, author - co-author of a study about self-control. Let's see if we can get to another phone call or two. But before I get to that, and the second part of your study, you looked at ways to intervene and make people aware of the consequences of the choices that they were making. Were they less likely to lose self-control with this kind of intervention if they knew the consequences?

HEDGCOCK: So if we had them think about consequences, it did not seem to help them too much. On the other hand, if we had them think about ways that they would actually execute control, it did help them. And in particular, we had them choosing from tempting versus, you know, healthy snacks, and we saw that their snack behavior would change if they thought about ways that they could make better decisions.

FLATOW: Mm-hmm. Did you try to distract them at all and see if that would bring self-control, a little bit, back?

HEDGCOCK: No. So we did not look at distracting them later. Often, we would use a distraction sort of thing to diminish their ability to their self-control.

FLATOW: Mm-hmm. Go the phones, to Jamie(ph) in Cleveland. Hi, Jamie.

JAMIE: Hi.

FLATOW: Hi there.

JAMIE: Thank you for taking my call.

FLATOW: You're welcome.

JAMIE: I remember hearing an article on NPR, once, that - about a study to a - with dieters. And they had people think about very specifically eating M&M's, and the crunching and the taste and swallowing. And then afterwards, the control group that was not told to think about eating M&M's had way too bit - ate way more M&M's than the people who thought about it. And I was just wondering what you think the self-control, and if you can trigger a brain into having more self-control by thinking - by making it think we've already given it.

FLATOW: Sure.

HEDGCOCK: Actually, I believe - if I'm thinking of the same study you're talking about, I believe what they're doing is satiating people. So basically, if you're imagining eating, you know, M&M after M&M, eventually, even though you're just thinking about it, it can make you start to think that you're getting tired of eating them. So this sort of, you know, perceptual satiation is happening. So, you know, if you had them, for instance, eat just two or three, it might actually make them more - make it harder to resist temptation. But after eating 30 or 40, they start to think, well, I don't find these very appetizing anymore. I'd prefer not to eat them. So it's definitely possible to sort of mentally, to convince yourself to eat more or less that way.

FLATOW: Mm-hmm. Let me see if we get more question from Molly in Washington, D.C. Hi, Molly.

MOLLY: Hi, guys. Thanks for taking my call.

FLATOW: Mm-hmm.

MOLLY: So I read a book, last year, called, "Willpower," exactly on this topic, and its central premise was that you can improve that depleted resource of willpower/self-control, as we're calling it in this study here, through glucose. And I was wondering if the author could talk about that. They proved, in my mind, pretty positively that a regular intake of glucose, not necessarily super sugary substance, but that base, I guess, willpower generator, could really improve your discipline.

FLATOW: All right. Let's get an answer. Thanks for the question.

MOLLY: Sure.

HEDGCOCK: So I believe that that book and the study was someone named Roy, excuse me, Roy Baumeister did that research. And they have found that if you have people drink sugary substance, that can end up increasing people's self-control. Our study does not directly address that. I guess, our results are consistent with that, and that we less activation in the brain and that could hypothetically be from lack of glucose. But at this point, all we can say is that there's just less activity in that part, and we don't know why.

FLATOW: As an assistant professor of marketing, do you think that marketing people would love them to convince you how to lose self-control and go on and buy their product?

HEDGCOCK: Yeah, so it's certainly possible. That's one way that marketers could use this information. Actually, there's just as many marketers who would like to improve your self-control, so you could think about, you know, fitness clubs or diet companies, or, you know, particularly finance companies or retirement savings. You know, they could only make money if you actually do exert self-control, and we hoped they'd find it useful to figure out and how to improve that.

FLATOW: Dr. Hedgcock, thank you very much for taking time to be with us.

HEDGCOCK: Oh, thanks for having me.

FLATOW: Have a good weekend. William Hedgcock, neuroscientist and assistant professor of marketing at the University of Iowa, also co-author of a study in the Journal of Consumer Psychology.
