Groupon says 4th-quarter was weaker than reported

(AP) ? Groupon Inc. said Friday that its fourth-quarter loss was wider than initially reported because it needed to increase the amount of money it sets aside for refunds.

The disclosure weakened the company's first quarterly report since it went public in November, which already had disappointed investors, and added to its list of fumbles.

Groupon prominently promises to refund money to any user unhappy with a deal, an important part of its business model that has made it so popular. The need for the revision, however, indicates it might not have the controls in place to adequately keep up with its own success.

Groupon said that it was selling online deals at higher prices during the period. and that put it on the hook for larger refunds. The revision lowered the company's quarterly revenue by $14.3 million and widened its loss by $22.6 million, or 4 cents per share.

The company originally reported in February a surprise loss of $42.7 million, or 8 cents per share, for the period. It said at the time that its revenue nearly tripled to $506.5 million from the same quarter a year earlier.

Groupon's auditor Ernst & Young also flagged a weakness in the company's internal controls over its financial statement for the period in a regulatory filing Friday.

Groupon said it is working to identify and address the underlying causes and said it may have added expenses to solve the problem, including the cost of hiring more financial staff for the quickly growing company.

The company's shares plunged in after-hours trading on the news.

This is not the first time Groupon has struggled to get its financial reporting in order. The company faced federal scrutiny before its initial public offering for the way it accounted for revenue.

Groupon makes money by sending out frequent emails to subscribers offering a chance to buy discount deals for anything from manicures to ballroom dance lessons. The company takes a cut of what people pay and gives the rest to the merchant.

The company used to report all of its gross billings, not just the money it gets to keep, as revenue. After federal regulators questioned the practice, Groupon submitted new documents in September that showed that net revenue in the first half of 2011 was about half of what it originally reported.

The company's rapid growth, financial reporting difficulties, high marketing expenses and enormous employee base have caused some IPO experts to compare its ascent to the late 1990s tech boom ? and bust.

Groupon has failed to impress investors since its market debut. It started strong, pricing above expectations at $20 and raising $700 million in its offering. Its shares soared 31 percent in its first day of trading, closing at $26.11. It has fallen 30 percent since then, closing regular trading Friday at $18.38.

The company has struggled with intense competition from other daily deal sites and complaints by merchants after they've been overwhelmed by customers using, and sometimes abusing, the company's offers.

Groupon also issued a more modest growth forecast for its first quarter as the number of subscribers signing up for its service and the number of merchants joining appears to be slowing.

The company stood by its 2012 first-quarter expectations for revenue of $510 million to $550 million. But that is still single-digit growth year-over-year when it delivered double-digit growth in every quarter of 2011.

"We remain confident in the fundamentals of our business, as our performance continues to highlight the value that we provide to customers and merchants," Groupon's Chief Financial Officer Jason Child said in a statement.

The company also said Friday that it would extend its "lockup" period one month beyond what it had set out at its IPO. These agreements restrict the sale or transfer shares held by certain stockholders, often executives in the company. The agreements also prevent key stockholders from unloading shares or flooding the market, which could hurt its price.

Groupon said that its lockup agreements were originally scheduled to expire on May 2 but the company will be reporting its earnings on May 12 and the agreement forbids the two being so close to each other. As a result, the lockup period will be automatically extended through June 1.

Shares of Groupon, based in Chicago, plunged $1.24, nearly 7 percent, in after-hours trading.

Waze (for iPhone)

Could crowdsourced GPS navigation be the next big thing? Waze gives you voice-enabled GPS directions on your iOS, Android, BlackBerry (currently in beta), or Symbian-powered Nokia phone. Best of all, it's free. It's far from perfect, but if you're willing to trade some routing accuracy for features you can't find on other navigation apps, like real world travel times and up-to-the-minute, user-reported traffic jams, Waze is certainly worth checking out.

Crowdsourcing, Interface, and Routing
For this review, I tested Waze 3.1.1 on an Apple iPhone 4 on Verizon Wireless. It's a 20.9MB download, and works on any iPhone or iPad with iOS 4.0 or later. Android owners already have free voice-enabled GPS navigation, and even the free Google Maps Navigation in Android lacks crowdsourced route data.

So here's how it works: Waze connects you to other drivers automatically (and anonymously) in the background. The app then pools data from everyone and channels it into more efficient, time-saving routing algorithms based on real world trip data from other users, not just what the map data infers. This is essentially what TomTom does with its long-standing IQ Routes feature, but we've never seen it on a free phone app before.

That said, crowdsourcing isn't a panacea, as the app's underlying routing algorithms need to be sound. It's here where Waze begins to fall flat. For example, I experienced some trouble with the start of a route on the east side in New York City. In order to go to central New Jersey, and unlike the Garmin n?vi 3590LMT ($399.99, 4 stars) I had on hand for comparison, Waze wanted to send me down the FDR, through Brooklyn, and through Staten Island, which, frankly, is completely insane. The ETA also jumped around numerous times, sometimes by as much as 30 or 40 minutes, until it finally settled in.

Once I got going and ignored the initial instructions, Waze figured out a better route by the time I had driven several avenues west across Manhattan. From there, it had no problem navigating me to my destination, although there were a few additional missteps. First, it stumbled on the entrance to the Lincoln Tunnel, and wanted me to drive around in what amounted to a near-circle instead of taking the immediately available entrance. And at the end of my trip, Waze claimed victory early and registered the route complete several blocks away from my actual destination address?even though it was part of a retirement community built in 2005.?

Navigation, ETA, and Audio
Waze isn't a particularly full featured as a navigation app, either. While en route, Waze doesn't display your current speed or the current road speed limit, and there's no 2D or 3D lane assistance. On the plus side, the colorful, animated traffic icons showing the current status and delay times looked sharp on the map on my iPhone 4.

Waze (iPhone) Nav

Despite Waze's uncertainty in the beginning of trips with regard to ETA, it actually did a better job overall in testing than other navigation apps I've tested. You can tell it's crowdsourcing data, because it knows that even if a route is technically shorter, you could still end up taking just as long as the longer way on the highway, because of all the street lights. I watched several instances where Waze nailed the ETA in actuality, whereas the Garmin GPS guessed I'd arrive earlier, only to adjust itself as the trip went on to eventually match what Waze had said all along.?

There's also text-to-speech support, but it's not perfect. The voice prompt timing was a little less well tuned than the standalone Garmin n?vi 3590LMT, but I still had no problem following where Waze wanted me to go. While Waze read exit names correctly on the highway, it generally ommitted street names in favor of a basic "In 0.3 miles, take a right," followed by "take a right," which was disappointing. It doesn't tell you the name of the exit in advance, either. It will say, "In one mile, get ready to exit on the right," but won't say the actual exit name until when you're right on top of it, which is a little inconvenient.

On the plus side, voice prompts sounded full and warm, with just a touch of distortion (mainly from excessive limiting, in order to make the most of the iPhone 4's tiny speaker). I heard a few pronunciation gaffes, including "Geo Gia" for Georgia?although once I exited the highway, it got Georgia correct; apparently different modes use different pronunciation dictionaries.?

Incident Reporting, Lock Screen, and Conclusions
Tap the exclamation point on the bottom right, and it will pop up nine icons to report an accident, police activity, heavy traffic, and other road hazards. In landscape mode, it will only show six icons, though; you need to scroll to the right to see the other three. Still, this is where Waze really shines; the app popped up plenty of real-time traffic alerts during my various testing. And on one test route in particular, Waze popped up an alert that there was police activity coming up 400 feet ahead. And there was! There was a cop car at the side of the road with its lights on. Waze prompted me to either give it a thumbs up (meaning the report was correct), tell it that it was close but not exact, or tell it that there was in fact no cop present.

One other glitch: Waze didn't disable my iPhone's lock screen, the way TomTom, Magellan, and other navigation apps do. After a few minutes, the screen turned off while I was driving. When I pressed the power button to light up the screen again, it wanted me to enter my lock screen code. This is not good at 75 miles per hour. You can disable the iPhone's screen lock and re-enable it later, of course, but that's a clumsy thing to have to do each time you get in and out of the car.

Overall, Waze offers a fine, free GPS navigation solution, and with its heavy emphasis on crowdsourcing, it even offers some features that top brand names in navigation currently lack. On the other hand, its routing still needs plenty of work, and it could be more informative once on the road, both visually and audibly. The app has a bit of a revolutionary feel to it, thanks to its enthusiastic community of users, and thanks to the fact that it's free. If that appeals to you, by all means download Waze and give it a go. Otherwise, if you'd rather have a more accurate and traditional, albeit more costly, navigation experience, check out our Editors' Choice for GPS apps TomTom (for iPhone) ($59.99, 4 stars), or the also-solid Magellan RoadMate (for iPhone) ($59.99, 4 stars).

Fix Up Your Home With These Home Improvement Tips | Articles ...

Tackling home-improvement tasks is something many find to be a disconcerting prospect. Nonetheless all that's needed for successful projects is knowledge about the most expensive materials and techniques. Put these tips to work on your next job, and you will be well on your way to creating the home of your dreams.

When making arrangements for landscaping upgrades, consider local plants in your yard plan. They're generally more hardy and need less water than non-natives. Your plant selections will alter dependent on your area, but your county rural extension will be well placed to help you with planning. Also check to see if a local university has a program to help house owners with native landscaping.

Extension cords and cables can easily get tangled. There is very little more annoying than reaching for an extension wire and realizing it's tangled. The best way to keep your extension cords from tangling, is by coiling them nicely into a bucket while not being used. This way, when you want them, you can just reach in and use.

When it comes to renovation, it's very important to grasp which types of improvements will add to the value of your home and which will not. This could be important when it does come time to sell your place. Such general upkeep like sealing the driveway and replacing the roof won't add to the price , however , an additional lavatory or a terrace may.

Check the credentials of any pro you employ for any do-it-yourself projects. You need to ensure that they are qualified to be completing the work they're taking on, and that it's going to be done right with the very best standards in effect. You can avoid many accidents by checking professional certifications.

If you abhor painting and paneling, try wallpaper. Wallpapering your home is a very simple and inexpensive way to add a brand-new look to any room. Be leery of which paper you select, as some are way more tricky to remove than others, in the case you may not like it in days to come.

A good way to come up with ideas on home-improvement can be to look around in an ironmongers. Hardware stores will generally have plans that may be used to get new ideas for improving ones home. They may also have the needed materials for whatever project one selects to take on.

You should not hesitate and go and have your hot water tank insulated. This is a good idea because a lack of correct insulation suggests that plenty of heat is lost. You are able to save yourself a good amount of cash by having insulation installed on the heater.

If you're attempting to remove wallpaper as an element of a home-improvement project, especially if you're removing wallpaper with paint on top, consider leasing a wallpaper steamer. On plaster walls, a wallpaper steamer can considerably speed up the process of wetting and scraping the wallpaper. Nonetheless you need to take great care when employing a wallpaper steamer on drywall, as the drywall is pretty easily damaged with all of the scraping and steam.

When renovating your home, you should usually stay close to the home?s original character. If your street is covered with Victorian-era tudors and you opt to turn your house into a glass-fronted homage to modern architecture, it will stand out worryingly and irritate your neighbours. Additionally , the more you differ from the home?s original structure, the higher the cost of the restoration and the less the probability of getting an investment return.

Working to boost your own home is something that intimidates many [**]. The key to succeeding in such an enterprise is arming yourself with the correct info prior to starting. By employing the pointers and advice in this article, you'll have the education necessary to greatly increase the appeal and cost of your home.

Judge: Asus Transformer Isn?t Infringing On Hasbro?s Trademark ? And Asus Reveals Embarrassing Sales Stats

asusA federal judge has ruled that Asus' Transformer Prime tablet does not infringe on Hasbro's Transformers trademark, in spite of the suit actually making sense. Just "Transformer", or just "Prime", might have flown right by Hasbro's lawyers without a second look ? those are words, after all ? but putting the two together seemed like tempting fate. As expected, Hasbro took Asus to task in December. But the judge has initially sided with Asus, saying that people were unlikely to confuse the tablet with Hasbro properties, noting they had also waited too long to file the suit. As a little kicker on the story, court filings have revealed that the device has produced pre-order numbers that are, shall we say, less than legendary.

In India, lots of coconuts but a dwindling crop of pickers

NEYYATTINKARA, India ? Retired government worker and small-time coconut farmer Prakasan Thattari is very proud of his invention: a machine with the look of a giant metallic praying mantis that clangs fearlessly up vertigo-inducing coconut trees.

It climbs well, but has a little trouble cutting off the coconuts once up there, said Thattari, who estimates that he's gone through thousands of dollars tinkering with various gizmos.

"I spent all my retirement money," he said. "The machine is close to my heart."

Here in India's southern state of Kerala, a lush land known as "God's country," coconuts are big business: The state boasts more than 500 million coconut trees, covering 40% of its land. But these days, coconut farmers are finding it increasingly difficult to find pickers, as younger, better-educated workers shun manual labor for more prestigious "chair" jobs.

So in 2009, the state offered a $20,000 prize for the best robotic coconut picker, and since then the praying mantis and more than 400 of its strange cousins have sallied, crawled and grappled forth.

Unfortunately, most failed to climb, broke down or were completely impractical. Some belched diesel or were so heavy that they couldn't be moved easily over rough jungle ground. Those that climbed weren't good at cutting the coconuts once aloft. There are now three finalists. (Sadly, Thattari's invention made it only to the top eight.)

"They all have problems," said Balsubramanium Giriraj, one of the judges and a mechanical engineering professor at PSG College of Technology in the city of Coimbatore. "I still think you need human beings."

S. Sathish makes the job look easy: He tucks a machete into his waistband and shimmies spider-like up 60 feet of tree in Neyyattinkara, bringing several coconuts crashing to the jungle floor with a few deft cuts.

He's been picking part time for three years when he's not driving a truck. Climbing is tiring, he said, but once you get the hang of it, you can scamper up pretty quickly. Mornings, he explains, are best, before dust settles on the trunks, making them difficult to grip.

He says he can climb up to 50 trees per day at 50 cents per tree.

"I make more money driving," he said as sunlight danced on his skin through the palm fronds. "But as a picker, I can set my own schedule, don't have to do late-night runs and can be in the middle of all this nature."

But Sathish is among a dwindling number of pickers of the human kind, the downside of Kerala's success. Exact numbers aren't readily available, but old-timers estimate that available workers have dropped by two-thirds.

The state, with the highest literacy rate in the country at 93%, does a good job educating people, raising their expectations. But it's short on industry or jobs. The result is ranks of unemployed who wouldn't think of sullying their hands, even though some coconut pickers earn more than teachers or nurses do.

Even those with limited education and skill become choosy, given the option of construction jobs in the Persian Gulf states, a local stigma against manual labor and Kerala's left-dominated politics that have long encouraged strong labor unions and food support programs.

"They're just plain lazy," said K.P. Peter, a small-time coconut farmer. "They get all sorts of subsidies from the government, don't show up on time, leave us stranded. There should be a law against such irresponsibility."

As part of their search for pickers, industry groups have looked to the likes of Thailand and Indonesia, countries that train monkeys to pluck the coconuts. (Understandably, some local workers find the prospect of being replaced by a monkey mildly insulting.)

But the monkeys aren't quite working out.

"The problem is, the monkeys climb but can't tell what's ripe and just harvest everything," said Sree Kumar, a professor at the College of Agriculture in Kerala's capital, Thiruvananthapuram.

In a bid to broaden the labor pool, the Coconut Board's Friends of the Coconut Tree program is trying to recruit women ? picking has traditionally been man's work ? older workers and anyone else who dreams of reaching for the fronds.

The board's six-day Friends course trains people to use climbing devices, allowing even the most uncoordinated workers to get themselves up a trunk, provided they stifle any fear of heights, which can reach 100 feet. (We're talking a 10-story building.) The climbing devices, in sitting and standing models, cost about $50 and work by ratcheting the rider up the trunk with a foot-powered device. Around for at least 30 years, they were upgraded in 2010 with rust-resistant materials and a revolutionary new feature: a safety belt.

Ben Woods: Confidence, Health and Fun the Recipe for Louisville's Success

I never turn off a University of Louisville basketball game at halftime, but this time, I did.

It was the regular season finale -- senior day at No. 2 Syracuse. After leading by 5 early, Louisville was down by 10 at half. That doesn't seem terrible, but following a home loss to South Florida and woeful shooting in its previous three games, it became unbearable to watch.

For the game (in which I ultimately watched the waning minutes), Louisville shot a slightly-better-than-whole-milk 8.7 percent from the 3-point line. Meanwhile, Syracuse shot a pedestrian 42 percent en route to a 58-49 win and the No. 1 seed in the Big East tournament.

This game seems as if it were two decades ago. Fortunately for Louisville, head coach Rick Pitino had something up his sleeve. He told his team to forget about the regular season and focus on the new season -- the postseason.

It worked. Louisville has won eight straight, including wins over five ranked teams, heading into quite possibly the biggest game in the history of basketball in the state of Kentucky: a Final Four date with University of Kentucky in New Orleans.

How is a team that couldn't hit a basket in its final regular season game playing in the Final Four? All year long, the pundits questioned the amount of talent on the Louisville squad, despite having three McDonald's All-Americans. People also wondered whether Pitino, who was nominated this year for the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, was past his prime. This is to be expected after back-to-back first-round NCAA tournament losses.

One reason is now, the team is healthy, or at least, relatively stable. Three players were lost to season-ending injuries, and numerous players missed games due to injuries. The players who will be available Saturday have been playing together since early February.

But the real reason, I think, is confidence, team cohesiveness and, oddly enough, fun.

Louisville has a number of decent shooters, yet they've had abysmal percentages in a couple of losses this year. Like most sports, bad plays and decisions are sometimes hard to shake off, but that's the only way to do it and be successful.

There's no doubt that this is a confident bunch now, and furthermore, they are an entertaining and likable group at that:

  • Russ Smith ("Russ-diculous" as Pitino calls him), the out-of control sophomore guard who never passes up a shot and made headlines by giving Pitino bunny ears during a live interview;
  • Gorgui Dieng, the sophomore center who speaks five languages and blocks shots, but then lends a hand to shooters who fall down;
  • Chane Behanan, the freshman forward who is as bold with his game predictions as he has become battling for points and rebounds, as noted by his West Region MVP award;
  • Peyton Siva, the often-maligned junior point guard who has returned from a nagging ankle injury in time to play his best and take home the Big East tournament MVP;
  • Chris Smith, the senior guard who has emerged from the shadow of his big brother, NBA star J.R. Smith, to post solid numbers across the board;
  • Kyle Kuric, the senior forward who came in as a walk-on, was put on scholarship but gave it up this year for team depth and currently leads the team in points.

Simply put, they're just a good group of guys who play hard and enjoy doing so with each other. And it's not as if these guys haven't had this attitude all year long. It's just a whole lot more fun when you're winning. That's why the game at Syracuse was such a downer for me, because I thought these guys deserved better.

I wasn't the only one who felt this way. Mike Rutherford, from the Louisville sports blog site Card Chronicle, expressed a similar sentiment. "I felt like if things weren't going to change that afternoon then any hope for some miraculous turnaround was officially out the window," Rutherford said. "But now we're here and I still have no idea how it happened."

This opinion could not have been clearer following Louisville's 50-44 victory over Cincinnati in the Big East championship. The happiness displayed by the team, coaches and everyone involved with the team was overwhelming. Team members pranced around the floor together, as if they were kids in the middle of a giant ice cream party. Family members and former Cardinal stars gathered and reveled in the tourney run.

This has been a remarkable accomplishment for a team that has no individuals on any All-America team, nor on the All-Big East team. Pitino deserves a large amount of credit, but despite his optimism, the team could have folded at various times during the postseason. Louisville had big leads whittled to single digits against Marquette and Cincinnati in the Big East tournament, but they prevailed in each. New Mexico made a furious comeback attempt in the NCAA third round, only to fall by 3 points. And when a solid Florida team was up 11 late, the Cards made their own comeback and held on for a 4-point victory.

Louisville is now two victories away from the grand prize -- the NCAA National Championship. Athleticism alone won't prevail, but a combination of teamwork and confidence, together with a dash of craziness and light-heartedness might do the trick. If anyone warrants the title, it's this group of uncommon Cards.

Pope Benedict visits Mexico

Updated at 5:12 pm today

Pope Benedict has arrived in Mexico on his first visit to Spanish-speaking Latin America, where the Catholic church is struggling to retain its influence.

Pope Benedict XVI arrives at Miraflores College in Leon, Guanajuato state, Mexico on his first trip to Spanish-speaking Latin America which will also include a two-day visit to Cuba.

PHOTO: AFP

He was welcomed by cheering crowds at the airport in Guanajuato state, the BBC reports.

President Felipe Calderon says the Pope's visit has enormous importance as Mexico struggles against drug-related violence.

The Pope has denounced drug culture, saying it is destroying Mexico's younger generation.

He also says Cuba, where he heads to after Mexico, has to turn its back on Marxism, which he said no longer corresponded to reality.

(AP) ? A submarine that will take "Titanic" director James Cameron to the Earth's deepest point has made a successful unmanned test dive.

Cameron tells National Geographic News that his specially designed submarine called Deepsea Challenger completed the nearly 7-mile test dive Wednesday. The team returned to calmer waters and was headed back to the site Saturday.

If all goes well, he'll spend about six hours exploring and filming the bottom of the Mariana Trench, about 200 miles southwest of the Pacific island of Guam.

Swiss engineer Jacques Piccard and U.S. Navy Capt. Don Walsh are the only other men to reach the spot. They spent about 20 minutes there during their 1960 dive but couldn't see much after their sub kicked up sand from the sea floor.

Six Biggest Sex Mistakes That We Do | Socyberty

Both men and women often make mistakes in sexual relationships. Many would welcome to hear a lesson what to do if something doesn?t work in bed. It is the responsibility of both partners to actively participate and learn about what they need to have a healthy, exciting and fulfilling sex life.

For a good sex life partners must exercise and find out what do they like. If you are not satisfied with these things now, there is hope for improvement. There is a lot of things you can do to change your relationships and make the most of your sexual expression.

I?ve compiled a list of 6 mistakes women make in bed and advice on how to fix them.

1. Expecting your man to think like women and vice versa?

This is a cause of frustration for many men and women. Men confuse women, and women do not understand men. Expecting them to think the same way, not only is useless and a waste of time, but also a cause for disagreements and tensions. Men and women are different. Their brains work differently. This is one reason why communication is so important! Thinking men view sex or have the same sexual feelings and desires as women will worsen sexual experience.

2. Do not expect your partner to read your thoughts

This is actually a continuation of the above tips. He can?t read minds, just as you can?t read his. You must express your sexual needs and desires. Many women find this difficult and do not feel comfortable. Partly this is a result of conservative upbringing that women impose a passive role and watching sex only for reproduction. So they find it hard to tell to a partner what they like and what not. They expect him to know, and he does not know!

3. Disclaimed initiatives

Why do women usually wait for med to make the first move? Why is he the one who has to show interest for sex, in order for it to happen? For many men, it is very attractive and sexy when women take the initiative. Call him at work and tell him that you have planned for him sexy, romantic evening. He will be excited all day. Surprise him with sexy lingerie when he arrives home. There are many options for how to encourage your partner to feel desirable and sexy. With a little imagination and effort, you can find exciting ways to initiate a passionate sexual encounters.

4. Rejection of spontaneity!

Sex should always be a planned event. Men love when women are more spontaneous in this regard. When you tell him to park a car, grab him and start kissing as soon as he enter through the door, hug him in the morning before he gets out of bed with a nice word that you want to start your day with passion.

5. Making love in the bedroom

Not only does this get bored, but is also limited. Use the kitchen table, couch, car, shower, bath or any other place that comes to mind. Monotony kills sex life. Do not be afraid to refresh!

6. Controlling partner by refusing sex

One of the worst things are to use a sex as a weapon. Sex was not created for it! He should apprehend a people and provide them satisfaction. Refusal of sex because you are angry is not good. This does not mean that you should agree to have sex when you?re not in the mood, or you just do not want. You should not agree to have sex because you do not know how to get out of situations, and you should not even let anyone pressure you or force you into sex. We?re talking about situations when you bring your conscious decision to refrain from sex in order to ?restore? your partner, or teach him the lesson because you had a fight. Sex is not a tool for manipulation!

These are just some of the things that you should consider in order to have a healthy, caring and exciting sex life. If you have this in mind and try to resolve problem areas, you?ll do well on your way of improving your sexual relationships and communication!

How To Make A Long Distance Relationship Work?

How To Have A Long Distance Relationship

Get some of the best secrets in making a long distance relationship work.

We get a lot of requests for posts on how to make a long distance relationship work or how to make a long distance relationship easier and the truth is, the majority of them don?t work out. That?s just the cold hard fact.

But if a long distance romance is ever going to work it?s today. Why? Simply because of technology. When I met my future wife in an overseas trip in 2005 I had little idea about long distance relationships and basically just ?winged it?. We used whatever we had at our disposal including Skype and phone cards. Fast forward a couple of years later and we are married and then, fast forward another five years and we are going strong.

Does it work like that all the time? No it doesn?t and that?s because most interests are usually just disguised as passion and eventually, two people will go their separate ways. But there is no harm in trying is there? And if you were ever going to succeed in a long distance relationship, it?s today.

Skype and phone cards are as accessible as ever but now, phone apps have become so sophisticated that you would be remiss if you didn?t invest in a smart phone for a start. A report recently at Mashable.com looked at the digital tools that make long distance relationships easier. They have listed at least thirty six and if you are in a long distance romance right now then this might be the most important ten minutes you spend online today.

The old Skype standby has come in handy for more than a handful of long distance-relationships, but it takes more than live video chat to make the love last.

That?s why we?ve gathered a series of apps, gadgets and social tools to support your faraway romance. Whether you?re curious how to text internationally for free, or how to plan your next reunion, these digital aids will keep your relationship in the running.

But these tools aren?t just for the Romeos and Juliets out there! Think of your dear mum and bubbe too ? though they?re less likely to know what the heck a ?location-based app? is in the first place.

What other tech tips do you have for maintaining your closest relationships? Sound off (or commiserate) in the comments below?.. ?

How To Make A Long Distance Relationship Easier? It?s one thing knowing how to make a long distance relationship work; it?s another thing in wanting to make it work. The truth is, without some physical contact then it doesn?t matter how advanced we are, relationships are going to run the risk of burning out.

So what made our relationship work? We did. We made the most important decision a couple can make to make long distance relationships work; and that?s to make a commitment to be together. Not talk about it or suggest it but set a date when and where. Without this type of commitment long distance romances are just casual flings without too much substance. Does that make sense.

Do you have any tools to add to the list that you can share with others on making a long distance relationship work? Are you currently in one? What are you doing and using to make it work? Have you planned to be together?

Oracle's final damage claim against Google well under $100 million

Oracle vs. Google
My, my, my, how the mighty have fallen. In this case, the mighty is the roughly $6 billion Oracle initially sought in its suit against Google. By September of last year that number had dropped to a comparatively paltry $2 billion, which was still to high for presiding Judge William Alsup. Now that has plummeted precipitously, with Oracle's new starting figure sitting at $32.3 million. Of course, the final total for the damages will likely be higher than that, but we'd be mighty shocked if the ultimate settlement was even close to $100 million. Google's own estimates put the valuation at between $37.5 million and $46.6 million -- a far cry from the $100 million starting point Alsup had suggested in July of last year. Now all that's left is for this sucker to actually go to trial. Hit up the source to read the full filing.

Oracle's final damage claim against Google well under $100 million originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 20 Mar 2012 16:38:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Tornado-hit Ind. school wins Lady Antebellum show

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? A southern Indiana high school wrecked by tornadoes won a free concert by country music stars Lady Antebellum on Tuesday thanks to a rival school that, along with students in other states, advocated on the battered school's behalf in an online contest.

Schools from as far away as northern Wisconsin submitted YouTube videos urging the Grammy-winning group to choose Henryville High School in the band's "Own the Night" contest offering the winning school a concert at its prom. Henryville's schools were heavily damaged when powerful tornadoes ripped through the region earlier this month, killing 13 people.

The winning video was entered by students at longtime sports rival Silver Creek High School in nearby Sellersburg, Ind. Henryville also got video support from a southern Illinois community hit by a fatal tornado in February.

"It meant a lot to us and made a lot of people cry. Knowing there's that many people out there that cared to give it to us instead of their own prom," said 17-year-old Henryville junior Daniele Kats.

She said word spread quickly on Facebook about Lady Antebellum's choosing her school for the concert, adding: "It's gonna be awesome."

Lady Antebellum said the band was touched by Henryville's "story, resilience and unity following devastating tornadoes." Because of a scheduling conflict, the trio won't be able to perform at Henryville's prom on April 27, so a concert will be held for juniors and seniors in nearby Louisville, Ky., on May 16, followed by a benefit for the community.

Lady Antebellum singer Charles Kelley said Henryville students shouldn't be disappointed that the band won't be able to visit their community.

"Trust me, we have something even bigger in store," Kelley said in the band's video announcing the win. Fellow singer Hillary Scott added: "See you soon, Henryville!"

The trio, rounded out by Dave Haywood, won best country album at this year's Grammy Awards for "Own the Night," and took home several Grammys last year, including record and song of the year for "Need You Now." Details about its Louisville concert will be released soon.

The winning video from Silver Creek High School included footage of the devastation in Henryville and interviews with residents. It ends with a student standing in a field before dozens of classmates, saying: "Lady A, even if we don't win the contest, we're still going to own the night anyway" before they begin chanting "HHS! HHS!"

Other video entries supporting Henryville came from D.C. Everest Senior High School in Weston, Wis., and from Harrisburg, Ill., where a tornado that struck Feb. 29 killed seven people. Harrisburg students said that despite their community's loss, they decided to back Henryville's prom bid.

Henryville art teacher Amy Fischmer, the prom committee's co-chairwoman, said her students were "grateful and happy" about the outpouring of support on the school's behalf following the devastating storms on March 2.

"That day was a tragedy, but they're just rallying and making the most of it and just enjoying life," she said. "For the winning video to be one that was entered on their behalf from another school makes it mean so much more. It kind of reaffirms your hope in humanity."

Classes for Henryville high school students will resume on April 2 in a nearby community. The prom, which is expecting about 200 students, also will be held at another site.

Mary Beth Coffman, Silver Creek's mass media teacher, recruited three of her students to be the video's stars and spent two days filming in Henryville for the video.

"I've been jumping up and down and screaming by myself," Coffman said. "I'm so excited to be part of something that's going to be so special."
